This working group supports small-scale fishermen and coastal communities in Africa. Millions of Africans earn a living from small-scale fishing which provides food for many families every day – even for the ones that live far from the sea.
The small-scale fishermen's methods are sustainable and they respect the livestock by not overfishing, yet their livelihood is under a sever amount of pressure. The commercial fishing, which notably stems from the EU, is emptying the oceans around Africa and leave small-scale fishermen without work and people without food.
Therefore, the working group for the mobilization of small-scale fishermen supports coastal communities in their effort to come together and organize themselves to defend their right to fish.
The working group has for many years now supported the Masifundise Development Trust which works in around 40 fishing villages in South Africa's eastern Cape. The objective is to support and strengthen local fishing associations and their work to legalize small-scale fishing and improve the lives of the fishermen.
