Support communities affected by mining

Afrika Kontakt is looking for dedicated activists, interested in taking part in solidarity and project work with communities affected by the mining industry.
06. november 2018

As the Mozambique group is currently working on designing a new project, new members will have the possibility to take part in this process and help shape the new project.

Our partner organization AAAJC work with democratic mobilization of local communities in Mozambique’s Tête-province and supports them in seeking redress and compensation for violations caused by extractive industries in the province. AAAJC’s work revolves around supporting and organizing local communities, raising awareness of their legal rights, assisting communities in seeking redress and monitoring the implementation of agreements. In addition, AAAJC conducts evidence-based advocacy to help change political and industrial practices in Mozambique and beyond and work to improve gender equality within partner communities.

As an activist in the Mozambique group, you would get the chance to

  • Work closely with a Mozambican human rights organisation towards a common goal
  • Gain valuable experience designing and managing a project with the Danish Civil Society Fund (CISU)
  • Plan and carry out partner visits
  • Work with political campaigns on extractive industries and climate change, human rights and global distribution of resources

We are looking for people who

  • Have an interest in the issues and conflicts surrounding natural resource extraction as a development model
  • Want to gain experience with project work, including financial administration and assessment
  • Will engage for at least 6 months
  • Knowledge of Portuguese or Spanish is an advantage, but by no means a requirement.

You do not need previous experience with volunteer- or activist work. By becoming active in Afrika Kontakt, you will gain political and practical experience, the chance to make a difference and to be part of a vibrant organisation made up of dedicated activists from all walks of life.

Anyone who shares our principle of active solidarity with active people, can join Afrika Kontakt. Our only requirement is that you become a paying member of the organisation (50kr a month) and that you are willing to dedicate the time needed.

As an activist in Afrika Kontakt you will take part in a dynamic and social working collective, engaged in the struggles to secure economic, social and political rights globally.

Potential new members are highly encouraged to come and take part in the after-work bar at Afrika Kontakt on November 23, 2018, from 5 pm. It is hosted by the Mozambique group and will feature a talk by Ali Chaucate, AAAJC’s legal advisor. Join us for a chance to meet both Ali and the Mozambique group and learn more about our work in an informal setting.

Feel like joining? Please write a short motivation for joining the group to marie@afrika.dk, or call Afrika Kontakt to learn more +45 3535 9232. Arranging an internship with us is also a possibility.
